ok i dont know if this is in the right spot, so feel free to move it if it is.

I have a bad rattle, which i thought was an exhaust rattle but I have tightened all the clamps and hangers from the turbo back, so I have run out of ideas there. I dont see it contacting anything either. The general area where it is coming from is around the front pipe, near the transmission. It rattles at idle, around 600-700 rpm. Also if I push up or down on the exhaust, it will make it better or worse(depending on the direction i push on it).

I know this kind of thing is hard to diognose, especially over the internet, but if yall have any suggestions on what to try next feel free to tell me. This thing is driving me crazy.

Thanks

not really, plus if something was inside the pipe wouldnt it move around and therefore the sound would be in different spots at different times?

Is your exhaust tubing touching any cross members or parts of the frame? My 02 rattles every now and then when I shut it off right around the area of the trans/t-case.

its not touching any crossmembers. it looks like the dip stick might be touching the down pipe a little, however it has exhaust wrap on it. could this still cause it to rattle pretty loud?

x2... was gonna suggest checking that. There's a tab sticking off the downpipe that's been known to crack.....

well i looked at the tab and it doesnt look cracked. however, i dont have the tools on me at the moment to pull the bolt to see if it is broken off at the weld or something. I will be able to check this on friday though to make sure though. thanks for all the ideas, keep them coming :thumb:

little update, after messing around with it some more i now do believe it is the dipstick tube, i dont know where it is hitting though thats not wrapped. I thought the exhaust wrap would prevent this, but i guess not. when i move the dipstick tube around the rattle gets really bad so my guess is i will have to reshape the tube somehow to fix this. At least now I might know what the problem is and can actualy do something to try to fix it. I'll keep yall posted on if I fix it or not

Check the 2 nuts holding the dipstick tube to the trans. They are supposed to be lock nuts but most people throw them away and put on regular nuts and they will back off and it rattles badly especially when your wiggling it by hand. Not that I ever lost the lock nuts and replaced them with regular ones:happy2:

oh, i just looked at the dipstick tube bracket that attaches to the transmission, and this might be the problem. one side is bolted down but the other is completely free. This could very well be the problem but with the round downpipe the other side of the bracket wont reach the bolt it needs to get to. what did yall guys do to this bracket so both tabs on the bracket would line up because it doesnt reach with a round downpipe, and if i bend it, wont it make the bracket shorter so it still wont reach the bolt?

last time i had a rattle like that it was my downpipe clamp, I would take it off & make sure the exhaust is sitting right with the down pipe & re tighten it & see if it goes away.May need a new clamp.

the downpipe clamp is good. I am willing to be it is the transmission dipstick tube now. I pried on it yesterday where it wasnt touching the downpipe and this morning, no noise:D. Hopefully this was the problem, however, I would like to try to get the other side of the bracket bolted to the transmission if possible, just trying to figure out how to do it.
