Hello all

After my ECM fiasco, I've decided to reward myself with another turbo upgrade. I ordered an Aurora 5000 from ATS. Any suggestions on what to avoid with such a large turbocharger?
I've been running the 4000 for several months and like it pretty well. The 3000 seems to be a better all around turbocharger with compared the two.
I've damaged the 3000, must have dropped something into the pedestal mount. During the conversation with Wade at ATS, he assured me the 5000 would deliver beyond my expectations. Once the conversation ended, I'm the proud new owner of said turbocharger.

Any advice would be appreciated, I've got some butterflies in my stomach.

congrats on the new charger, a lot of people have run big numbers with that charger, probably set the benchmark for dmax performance, i have heard some people complain about bad towing with that charger but i have heard others love it. its just a big boy and likes alot of fuel

what you gonna do with the 4000?

Not sure yet, may have to put it back on the truck if the 5000 proves to be a little on the large side.

LarryJewell has been hinting around, he may end up with it on his truck. He has pretty much pushed his turbo to the max.

i know Steve (freighttrain) he has towed big trailers with his a5k before his build and never complained once, i believe you just cant pull in over drive for the most part or it will fall off the charger

oh wow you dont have a built tranny?

Yes I have a built transmission. Just not a properly built transmission. I drive an incredible amount of miles 45k just in the last 6 months not counting family trips or personal mileage. I am incredibly hard on my transmission. I push my truck to see what the limits are, then I fix these areas to improve. Ask LarryJewell.

So what is your take on the 4000? Did it make more power than the stocker? Reason I ask is cause it would meet the sled pulling 2.5" limit and if it its a pretty good producer, thats just more options for guys to go with in that class. As far as I know, the 3000, 4000 and PPE GT4088 are the only ones in kit form that fit the bill.

Good luck with your A5K. I'm not sure its quite the daily driver you may be looking for though. Who knows though, different people interprate things and assess things differently so it may be awesome for you.

Hello SmokeShow

I've had the A 2000 3000 and 4000. Compared to stock they all make tons more power. I had the 2000 at first and gave LarryJewell a ride in it after the install and he refused to ride with me again. the 3000 was, to me the best of the 3. It made power for all the purposes I used the truck for. The problem with the 3000 is it came on strong and was pretty much maxed out with the fuel spool pretty quick. The 4000 came on real strong close to mid range and stayed spooled through out the rest of the rpm range. The more fuel and less timing I gave it the better it spooled and the faster it would spool.

The A 2000 and A 3000 spooled way faster than the stock charger. The A 4000 was somewhat slower to spool than stock but was by far the greatest producer of higher end power. Shifting the transmission at 34 to 3600 gave an awesome seat of the pants ride.

The A 2000 is now on a ford IDI 7.3.
The A 3000 has a turbine wheel blown off of it.
The A 4000 is waiting for the results of the A5K install. This charger, in my opinion so far, is FANTASTIC. The only reason I have ordered and prepared to install the A5k is because of Wade's, ATS Diesel, confidence in the A5K. If this turbo proves to be a daily driver blunder, the 4000 will go back on until the races.

I still have the stock charger, it only needs a Bighead wastegate, otherwise it is still practically new.

Just my experience.

EXCELLENT testimony. You have spent some money with ATS huh!?!

Guess I need to add another charger (the 4000) to the list of possibilities. Thanks again for your report. ;)

I do make it look as if I've spent a lot of money with them, but really once your buy one kit for the Duramax, the turbo's interchange quit easily, even the 5000 only takes a few hundred dollars to adapt to fit the pedestal I've been running for all the Aurora's. Call and speak with one of the guys there. Or ask for Wade.

Thanks, I will if I decide to go that route. I have plenty of time to decide though. ;)

Do you know what kind of charger ATS uses for the 4000? For example, the A5K is also known to others as a K31. Just wondering what the other Aurora chargers are based on. I'm thinking S300 but not sure.

Thanks again for your help, in your thread. Sorry for sort of taking it off topic on ya. I'll butt out now. :)

No problem, I'm not sure, have been told different things by ATS. I do know they have done a lot of r/d on pedestals and wheels as well as their housings. I don't think they are off the shelf, but may be built to their specs.

I had to change my drawers after that ride, going sideways down a 2 lane road with on-coming traffic is no fun when your not in control!!! :help:

I've been round and round with may may chargers. Yes the K31 is the A5K with a smaller exhaust housing (compresor wheel a little different but not much). The only thing I don't like about the ATS ped. is the tiny T3 flange. PPEs T4 pedistal is WAY better flowing. But for street use I wouldn't rule out the PPE GT4088 for towing/racing and the GT4094 for running the street/tracks. The GT4294 also makes an exellent roadwarrior charger. However for simply running the track, it appears the GT42102 has it in spades. Not rippin on anyone's opinion just thowing out some info.

Hello Super Diesel

Thank you for the insight. I to have been round and round with the ATS pedestal, I've run it and I've built a replacement. I did find however that their pedestal for their turbo's seemed to be a perfect match for both velocity and flow to their turbo's.

Thanks again for your input.
