Anyone tried no intercooler on Duramax?

So H&S is pushing the air straight into the intake horn on their racetruck, no intercooler on that truck. I have been thinking about this for years and seeing that truck fly down the track makes that idea float thru my head again.

Has anyone every tried this on a duramax? I'm curious to see the difference in running a stock intercooler vs. no intercooler. I think i'm gonna fab up some pipes that go from turbo straight into the y-bridge, make them easily removable and test it at the strip next year, same day, back to back runs swapping between intercooler and no intercooler. And have some air temp sensors hooked up to see the difference.

I believe the H&S truck is inter cooled between stages.

Hmm you could be right about that, i didn't look that close but it just caught my eye that it didn't have the intercooler in stock location and from the turbos it went straight into the intake horn

I know of a member here that goes by 02freighttrain he ran his pulling truck "freight train" without an intercooler

Looked up some pics of the H&S setup, i must be blind i guess lol there definitely is an intercooler in that thing, just plumbed a lot different.

Nevermind i guess lol :roflmao::rofl:

But i'd still be interested to see what kind of difference it makes... hmmm

or a air to water cooler, no IC is only going to make the air hot, flow like crap though the heads and raise your boost PSI (not good), make your turbo work harder, raise your drive pressure and raise your EGTs/temps in the engine
so no, I don't want to try it!
Think about what you want in the engine, dense, cool air. as you heat air it expands so it takes up more volume for the same amount of O2

Yes well aware of the function of the intercooler lol :thumb: Was just checkin if anyone has ever tried it and what kinda results they had at the strip

Only guys have seen are the old gen 1 12V, and they do it with lots O IC/o2 in a bottle. Maybe someone else out there has. But a lot of the top end trucks I'm seeing are running air to water (gets it even colder)

Sorry wasn't trying to be a smart ass to you

The trucks I've seen non intercooled were runnin water/meth/nitrous post turbo to cool down the charge.

Correct. The H&S truck is being intercooled between stages. With those triples engineered and spec'd to run that way, the low pressure stage is being intercooled and the high pressure stage is not. It actually works really well. But proper turbo sizing is imperative.

I run my Duramax without a intercooler. I also don't run any water. In a race only setup, They are highly over rated. Now if your towing in the mountains you better have a pretty good one. I do run nitrous (.052 and a .081 jet) to help cool the inlet but my egt's never go over 1600. As Jdub said the turbo sizing is pretty important (exhaust side). Really the exhaust side is more important than a lot of people think anyhow.

More so looking to see in a race only application if it would kill u to remove it. I know the air would be hotter and I'm wondering like on a 650 hp truck or so. More or less important with stock turbo vs s400. For the fact an aftermarket is so expensive and how good is the stock one for racing. Plus after hot lapping and heat soaking it in line how much does it do really?

I'm on the other end of the spectrum, I wonder how street able a water to air unit is. I see them on all supercharged applications and had one in my lightning that was very efficient for the size. But to answer your question I would think the loss outweigh the benefits of not running one.

I ran without an intercooler all last year in my street rod. No nitrous or water meth. Put a couple small Chinese intercoolers in this year and it's a night and day difference in inlet temps. You can do it but they make some pretty serious heat without one. So even a mediocre intercooler is worth some power, even in low hp stuff.

Ok glad it's actually guys commenting that have done it not just speculation. If i do it I'll have nitrous or water injection

The 6.7 Powerstroke runs an air/water charge air cooler straight from the factory. It is comparatively small. They do run a separate low temp cooling system for it.
