Problem with rod experimentation is that there are existing rods out there that are proven to withstand the very high loads that diesels can put down.

There have been some experimental rods that have failed. That can get extremely expensive in a hurry.

Personally, I'd be very nervous taking that path.

this is what happens when uneducated idiots try their hand at making custom duramax rods.

Leave the rod R&D to the pros, and dont even think about wasting your time or money on anything but crower, carillo, R&R/TTS, or howards/DPR duramax rods.

anyone use custom chevy big block rods and machine the crank?

I can put you in touch with someone that had a custom Crowers made.

You can not do a lot of offset with the stock crank because of the lighting hole but some can be done.

Have you considered Viagra? It's supposed to do wonders for weak rods...

;)

Seriously, did you ever get "square" on that transaction?

Chad,

Funny thing is that the F.E.A. simulation software appears to show the failure point before the rod failed however the rods were made and used?

You would think that the makers and sellers would have looked at reinforcing that area or did it simply fail because the customer stated he wanted a much lighter rod?

There were a few sets that failed, Ben's was the worst iirc though.

I think Ben's were the only ones that windowed a block but others were found to have been slightly bent also.

too bad im not a mechanical engineer, otherwise I would have noticed that before I put the rods in my 'built' motor.

yes, you would think so...?

or did it simply fail because the customer stated he wanted a much lighter rod?

NOPE! The customer wanted a rod that was significantly stronger than a stock rod, but not as strong as the "unlimited" crower/carillo rods, for less $$ than the "unlimited" rods.

he made 10 sets IIRC.

Mine were the only ones that failed catastrophically (go figure) as far as I know.

I think 4 sets are sitting on shelves collecting dust, the remaining sets actually went into built engines. NONE of those trucks that received duramaxtuner CUSTOM RODS are still running. After mine blew up everyone else that was running the rods tore down their motors and found that they were all bent.

IMO, I put them at ~80% the strength of a stock LB7/LLY rod, and ~60% the strength of a stock LBZ rod.

Kind of funny, I (along with 10 other suckers) paid a lot of money for a set of rods that are roughly half as strong as stock LBZ rods, which people literally give away. ::happy2:

basically the lesson learned is its not even worth messing around in this area of dmax performance. Just buy the name brand rods and be done with it.
