It couldn't be a fleplate or converter issue could it Mick? I can't tell from the vid but it doesn't sound terrible.

Did you try doing a compression test yet? If you shortened a rod, then it may be a piston hitting the counterbalancer. A compression test would rule this out though.

Either way that really sux!! I hope for your sake it's something simple.

Not a real good vid to really hear it Dale. When driving on the road it really knocks and when I put my shortened broom handle on the header pipe on No 5 and to my ear at idle its a CLUNK, CLUNK down there somewhere. It will have to come out either way. Ive given up it being something simple :(

Two things: Piston slap, loose part.

My last motor (stock, factory built) always had piston slap in one cylinder. Probably why it was available. 40,000 miles later I swapped it for the new motor. Major difference. If you were running a dead injector, you may have hurt that bore.

If the knock varies with load/speed, I am thinking hard part. :( Take it out, roll it over and remove the oil pans. Loose connecting rod?

From day No 1 this engine had a dud MDE 10 Hole injector on No7 but noise seems to be out of No5 but need to see in the flesh.

With all the other things wrong in this new built engine I wouldnt be surprised if it was a loose big end either :(

Why does this matter?

Simple curiosity?... If it was a machine shop in Brisbane that has never done a Duramax prior to micks.... then thats one thing. If it was an experienced shop known for building several Duramax's then that is totally different thing.

No drum rolls here - just the truth
A brief history of this engine is

-I took delivery end of Dec 08
-Cost me - app 27k $US landed in Australia
-Long Engine with no accessories - No oil Filter Housing
-Was to be dynoed and run in - It wasn't started prior to recieving it
-Engine wouldnt start - I ended up paying an AutoElectrician $500 to find out why we kept getting a Cam Sensor Code. Found there was no Reluctor Plate on the end of Camshaft. Builder said it was left at Camshaft Regrinding shop after I called him. I pulled front off engine and used one off old engine.
-Sheared the Keyway on Crankshaft - Builder was meant to machine 2 full keyways, one stock location and one at 180deg He had 2 x 1/2 moon keyways on one line at stock location. I paid $AUS 1350 to have 2 new keyways machined in. Builder sent me an ATI hub with 2 keyways cut for free.
-Engine was pumping oil from breathers - Called the builder and he said to check to see if he'd forgotten the Baffles in the Rocker covers. He had. I took covers off my old angine and used those.
- Couldnt get the injectors to tune - No flow data supplied with them. Found one dud one and another half dud one. MDE 10 Holes and MDE said they should be ok? Builder didnt want to know about it. I paid $AUS 8000 for a new set from Guy. MDE's are sitting on the shelf.
-This engine has done app 1300 miles and it started a knocking noise about the time we had the injector issue. The new SoCal injectors have been good to tune but the knocking noise that seems to be from No 5/7 is getting worse and the engine is starting a vibration after app 2500 rpm.
-Oil is pumping out worse as time goes by. If the engine idles for 10 minutes there is enough oil from 2 breathers to fill a cup or more.

I will be pulling the engine next week and seeing if its worth salvaging or not.

The Builder seemed like a nice guy at the start but as problems developed he didnt want to talk to me or Mike in Texas who does a lot of liasing for me over there. His name is Curtis from DPR and he might be a nice guy but I have had a bad run with his engine. Meantime I have orderd a new 7.1 from SoCal Diesel. I hope we have a better run than this one. If we can get this engine repaired we will probably make a dedicated race truck.

I just don't like people being thrown under the bus at the amusement of others-but if Mick wants to tell who it is and the history like he did, then that's fine.

Not defending anyone, just trying to keep the wars down to a min if you know what I mean!;)

That said it sounds like things were doomed from the start Mick. Which sux cause that's alot of money and time to invest in something that doesn't pan out. I'm sure Guy's set-up will work out much better!!:happy2:

I've not had to deal much with Curtis from DPR, but the times I've spoke to him he was super nice and super helpful.
I believe he used to work with David Basham(BMS Machine) when they were with Banks, or something like that........................

Sorry for all the bad luck, man. Hope it all works out good for ya. I currently have a pending suit against a head shop. For my entire build I got screwed around, I know the feeling although I didn't spend as much time and money as you have. Best of luck!

Now bring on the flames,.............I'm already feeling warm.

No flames at all, just facts. Mick is a very nice guy just as Curtis is. As far a business dealings, that's the purpose of the post. If you pay the bill, as a customer, you've done your part. That's all.
