Figured there might be some welders on the board that could help me out on a weld I'm struggling with. First off, I went back to school at a tech college for welding, in my second year.

I need to make a 100% pen weld on stainless 0.11 thick without purging (teacher said to use a copper backer 1/4" thick). I'm beveling the groove and have tried using a knife endge up to 1/16 land, tried roots with no gap through 3/32.

I can't get the weld flush on the back side of the root, is this even possible with a copper backer? I'm getting really damn close but can't get the root flush or above consistently, I'm waiting for a keyhole like I would with stick then move along as fas as I can while maintaining the hole. It's holding color, so I figured maybe go hotter but as soon as I try to max out the pedal on my settings it will start melting out the sides of my root and gets out of hand.

Using a miller dynasty 200dx 105amp, 2.5pps, 95%peak 25%background, argon set around 27, #7 gas lense 3/32 thoriated.
