I really don't see any problem with it when its for learning, like the guy said he was doing... However if he sold ppe's tune to other people and claimed it as his own work. Yes that's not the most honest guy and that would be a problem.

X2 or if he sold his PPE and kept the tunes. Its an awful fine line to say your a thief for using PPE to learn off of, but not a thief for learning off a McRat tune.

Big difference. I write my tunes and send them out "unlocked" deliberately so my customer can learn from it or modify it.

Handhelds are "locked". They flash only one vehicle. Just because there are tools that allow you to copy them, doesn't mean they are unlocked.

But to be frank, most people have looked at handheld files.

not sure what mcrat tune you are refering to, but i learned from the 2020 tune he publically posted. thats it. i have seen others tunes from him, but dont use them. i enjoy the reward of saying i did it myself. if i have a question i find answers or ask the questions.

Ok so you saw an McRat did you pay for it? I'm sure you gained some knowledge from even glimpsing at his tune.

True but if your not selling/sharing the tunes and keep the tuner what harm is done? I'm not saying its right, but come on that is fairly innocent. I think most of us can say we have done worse then that at some point. I'm sure thats not what a lot of guys are doing and what they are doing is defiantly wrong.

Its funny to see how many people copy and sell tunes to others. There is a local shop here, that has copied all of PPE's tunes, and sells them via EFI with a few minor changes. You can totally tell by running a side by side of the tunes. He charges an arm and a leg, but people still go to him.

if seeing his tune and being happy that i was doing good and on the right track then yes i gained knowledge from it. although i never made any changes to or copied from it, nor ever flashed it to my truck. it is in fact from a customer of pats and was looking to help with some vain adjustments for better sounding idle. not trying to start a fight here.

I think most need to have some help to get started tunning. I bought EFI, took the class Pat and Guy put on and learned a lot. Unfortunately for me I cannot spend the time to keep up my skills. So i have asked for help from others and some help and some do not even respond to the request. I respect them all and say thanks to those who help and to those who did not. I have looked at Predator tunes and found that the tunes were not that good which is why I went to EFI in the first place.

I wish I had tuning to worry about, I can not justify losing a warranty with 99,300 miles to go !! I sure wish I knew the magic number of when it would break if it is going to. Do you tune at 30,000 if you have no problems? 20-40hp and mpg is all I want

Anyone with a STRONG running efilive tune who says they have never looked at anything besides their own and has not used some other canned tune as a starting point is full of shit. The whole innocent "well ehhh uhhh yeah I guess I sorta kinda did look at some canned tunes.....OH OH BUT BUT THEY SUCKED SO I DIDNT USE ANYTHING AT ALL FROM THEM, so that basically means I didnt look at them!!" line is bullshit too. How do you know it sucked if you looked at it and didnt try anything/copy anything from it???

EVERYONE has looked at stuff thats not their own and used it to their advantage.

I was one of the original beta testers for EFILive...as in me and like 15 other people were the first in the world to have efilive on their duramax's...do you think we just pulled those first rough tunes out of our asses? No, we all looked at what we currently had to work with that we knew was "safe". PPE, predator, etc...

Anyone with efilive on their duramax is NOT running 100% their own tune. It might be 95% their own custom tune, but they ALL got some hints/maybe a few table values from somewhere/someone else. There is no arguing with that statement.

Where the line needs to be drawn is with guys who are taking someone elses tunes, and only making them 5% their own tune, and 95% someone elses tune and selling it for profit.

I totally agree with your opinion Ben , except for the above in red . I used 100% Home built tunes right untill I switched to EFI From Rob 6 mounths ago . So ya it is common practice for people to do it but not every one does it :) And i will say without any pride in that Robs tune ran 3 10'ths faster than mine but he didnt have to change much from my base tune i sent him .

I know when I first came over seas and I had alot of time on my hands I snagged alot of tunes off of this site. I never have any intensions of selling them or handing them out to anyone, I just want to see what is going on and what people are changeing. I don't know if that is wrong from lookin at the Wendy tune and a few others off of here I have alooot better understanding of what is going on. And I am greatful to all that have shared. Morally I don't see how someone can go out and sell someone else's work.
