So for the last couple weeks my truck will start fine but after starting sit at around 12 volts and not get up to 14 until driving, rolling up or down windows would pull it down below 14, turning ac on high will pull it down below 14, also didn't have enough juice to kick on one of my high beam HID's. I got new batteries thinking maybe that was the problem (they were about 5.5 years old) It will now power all the HIDs but it is still sitting at around 12 volts after starting. Alternator going bad? Is it as simple as just putting a multimeter to the alternator and seeing what it is putting out? Thanks for the help

Verify you are seeing less than 13.5 volts with a volt meter with all lights on, stereo on, a/c on and anything else that came factory you can turn on. if its below 13.5, id say its time for a new one.

Thanks for the quick response. It is showing less than 13.5 on the gauge for sure with all that stuff on. Ill double check with a multimeter and if it is also showing below 13.5. New alternator it is. Thanks again.

I thought I had a alternator problem on my dmax before I sold it. Turns out the nut inside the red jump off box thing had backed off. It gave me all sorts of weird little electrical problems. So you might look into that especially if you've ever taken that nut off to get power from there.

Thanks for the tip Max, I replaced the alternator this afternoon and it is better now. The guy at the parts house told me that one of the diode packs in my alternator was shot and the alternator was as well.

test your battery as well if its over 4 years old. most batteries are designed for a 5 yr lifespan

I got one called a Mean Green, made in Latrobe PA. It is a high output ALT, with top quality parts.
I have had mine a full 4 years and no troubles at all. It puts out over 80 amps at idle and is a 220 amp alternator for those times when you need it to charge 4 batteries like when towing an RV or powering a BIG stereo system. Very nice!!

X2 on the mean green alternator had one in my old truck and if I ever need to change one of the 2 in this truck I will use mean green for it too.
