ok its a gasser, but it has an Allison, 2001 2500 HD with an 8.1L. trans seems fine, shifts fine, pulls fine, color of fluid looks fine. smell of fluid seems fine. runs about 190 deg unloaded on a warm day. Pull with is and it gets warm, most the time around 200/210. pulled yesterday about 10k lbs on a 90 deg day, climbing a big hill she got close to 250. pulled over let it cool down, finished drive home about 20 miles,, it did get just a bit over 200 but all seemed fine. fluid still looks smells good and shifts fine, no slippage. 140k miiles. Any thoughts on what to do?

Check the easy stuff first. Make sure the fluid is not above the "hot" full mark or it will foam and cause overheating, I keep mine a little below full when it's hot. If you have an IR non-contact pyro, check input and output temps of the cooler to see if it's clogged. When was filter last changed and was there a lot of sludge on the magnet?

I changed the spin on filter and the magnet hardly had enough sludge to fill a thimble. I think the level is little high. It's hard to check. The dip stick itself is a black in color. I'll lower the fluid. The fluid was serviced about 40k ago. It's probably about time. I'll heat check lines. Thanks

Spin on has nothing to do with heat. It is a low pressure filter for the solenoids and valve body.

Well, tyranny was about 2 quarts over full. got that out, we'll see if that helps. Also noticed the transmission lost that hydro noise/whine after I removed the extra fluid. Note to self, don't trust son to do your maintenance.

At least it wasn't topped off!

Flush and refill with new fluid. The proper amount. Change the internal filter too when it's empty.

And if you pull often consider an upgraded cooler. Mikes got them on sale now.

250 degrees is well outside my comfort zone for ally temps. Scanner or gauge temperature?
