I have a friend with an old square body Chevy like mine and he has put a Cummins in it. It currently has the ol' getrag 5spd behind and has purchased an Allison 545 from a med. duty truck with a 5.9 cummins to put behind it.

I've heard of these and seem to hear good remarks on their reliability and longevity for their application but that's about the extent of my knowledge on them. Are they good transmissions?? Can they be built up? To what level can they be made to handle? Lock up convertors? Better, multi-disk convertors available?

Just wondering what my friend's getting into.

4spd non-OD non-lockup. All mechanical, no park pawl.

They reside in just about every school bus in the world IIRC.

I think suncoast makes converters for them. Being non-lockup I cant see it being a real drag race big power trans. Not sure how much power they will handle, or anything else about them.

PM Brayden, Crafty1, or Mike...im sure they would be able to help you.

I have one & they are heavy... you can tell they are related.

Not sure what to do with it other than to put it back into a older truck where it belongs. If you plan on spending money to build something, go with the newer unit to get overdrive & the latest speed parts.

I'll pass the info along. I really don't know what he has planned for the truck as far as power goes. For now, it's a non-intercooled, ve-rotary-pumped, 12 valve = the least capable of all the Cummins' put in Dodges so I don't see it being a real fire breather. I was just curious what it's capable of out of curiosity just to know.
