So I've been building my 55 chevy truck up..

I finished paint and the 4 link rear this past week.

I have a moderately built 427 crate motor sitting in the rolling chasis.

My question is......i want a sleeper and a mean one at that and thinking of throwing a supercharger on it......nothing huge mind you.....dont wanna cut fresh paint....something sitting on the side scaring young children....

I have access to a decent milling machine and if i beg enough a CNC machine for mounts.

just looking for that bit more umph to make me buy new tires every 1k miles on the truck...

FYI I'm a big fan of surprise so the truck remains under sheets....my wife hasnt even seen it since I did the SSBC brakes a year ago.

I built one last year but its a nitrous motor. 427 with alcohol hilborn injection, 600 shot direct. Should be pretty fun. O and it's going in a 71 nova.

Spray is a pain in the ass on a daily driver. Always having to fill tanks sucks. I would rather be blown.

i agree, but anyone with half a brain will see/hear a charger. bottles you can hide

coming from strictly sleeper/street racer point of view:hug:

Check out summits catalog or online look at the Vortech line of superchargers. Mounts on the side like an a/c comp. belt driven off crank pulley. plumbs in like our turbos do. Carb sits in an aluminum box that is sealed to presureize the whole system. I havent personally ran one but I like the idea of it.

I agree, but If i'm reading it right he wants discrete. 6-71 means cuttin the hood and a bug catcher, not a sleeper in my book. Stock flat hood, just a noticeable whine at cruise speed till you stand on it, then hold on. Run the vortech thru an intercooler like our trucks lower the temp of the air and it'll be that much better. Cooler dense air means more power. Just like our trucks. :thumb:

Put a ProCharger on it. Easy to keep under the hood. No loss in mileage under normal use. No overheating.

Roots chargers look cool, but centrifugals make more power.
8# boost with intercooler will give you an approx 50% power increase.

Been building these for years. My work car (383 cube LT1 Z28) that I drove 60+ miles per day would put over 650hp to the wheels.... thats about 750 flywheel on pump gas.

Recently had a customer with a TVS2300 Magnacharger, maxed out on a built GTO. He picked up 75rwhp, going to a ProCharger.

If I want max power I will put a turbo on it and blow away the Procharger. There is nothing like a twin screw for power on the street since you only have a couple of blocks to play. Racing is a different story.

Sure turbo's are great as well, a little more complicated & expensive to install, but none the less the most powerful setup.

On a moderate performance build the Maggie is a great unit, especially on a heavy vehicle, but once you get into the 800hp range, I'll take a centrifugal every time. I built many full weight daily driver cars that 60ft in the 1.40's on a drag radial.

Remember the original question, we are talking about a 427 here, not something already underpowered. It is not like a moderately built 427 should not make 500hp already. Performance cars are my business, I know superchargers like you know transmissions. Show me a good maggie kit for a 427 that works with a carb & fits under the hoood...

well I guess I should have given some specs on the motor...the way it sits now is pushing 550-575 to the wheels..

but im also pushing 10.5:1 compression so i def dont want to be melting anything.

so im thinking something small for 5-7 psi just for shits.....its all forged components with built heads as well.

I guess I opened more cans of worms than expected.....

Unless you want to run race fuel you will be limited to very low boost. 10.5:1 big blocks are pretty octane sensitive to begin with. Like you said, 5-7 is about correct, as long as you are tuned properly. If you have access to E85, you have a lot more opportunity to crank up the boost. This would be a good way to go if you can get the fuel.

There are other alternatives, such as methanol injection that will allow you to run more boost on pump gas. What you need to be aware of is, you need cool air to lessen your octane requirements. I would not consider anything that is not intercooled. I prefer air-to-air setups on the street for simplicity.

If you make 575 to the wheels, you already are pushing 675-700 flywheel.
7# boost intercooled will get you about 40-45% more HP. At your power level, it sounds like you are running a pretty healthy cam with considerable duration.

Typically you will need to get your carb modified, which quite a few places can do. For a blow through application, a boost referenced regulator will also be needed.

Could make a nice 1000hp setup, as long as your bottom end is up to it.

Wow the E85 hadn't even crossed my mind, but I never have looked it in general though. guess I have some research to do.

But it is decently available near me. I can think 5-6 stations with it.

The bottom should definately be able to handle it. It has an Eagle Forged steel crank, SRP pistons and H Beam rods.

The Cam in it is Really healthy lol.

Appreciate all the info guys, just more searching to do.

Only been building this thing for 3 years now....Hard to do when i live 3 hours from the truck right now.
