My truck got broken in to a few days ago and trashed inside. First stop when I get it back from the body shop is to get a new alarm.

I was kicking around the Clifford Smart Start because that's what was recommended.

Which have you guys had good luck with and reasons for your decision please...

I had a Clifford alarm on my last truck and was a good one (keep in mind that was over 10 years ago). It even came with a microwave sensor so if the windows were down and someone stuck their hand inside to grab something it would go off.

Just make sure you get a good one that not only protects your truck but also your belongings inside.

Some people just think the factory alarm will protect their belongings and it doesn't.

neither does your fancy-shamnzy aftermarket alarm.............

Tell me how an aftermarket alarm is going to "better protect your belongings" than the factory alarm. Does it automatically pepper spray the dude and then tazer him when he jimmies your door open or something?

You think some super-dooper loud siren is going to scare off some punk after he smashes your window, grabs all your stuff in less than a minute, and then takes off? When is the last time anyone even paid attention (or called the police) to a car alarm that was going off, honestly?

Expensive alarms are for suckers, IMO. They dont protect your crap any better than the factory alarm. If a theif wants something in your truck, hes gonna get it.

Really the only anti-theft device that I think is worth doing is a custom (IE, not something you buy off the shelf that every theif knows the ins-and-outs of) ignition/starter kill switch. But even then, thats not going to stop a flat bed from taking your truck. Luckily im never really in a situation where I have to leave my truck in a sketchy area, but If I do, Ill pull some fuses, unplug one of the ECM connectors, or just take the whole ECM with me....

The best anti-theft system in the world is a good insurance policy...

I dont mean to sound like an ass, but......its the truth.

:secret:

I don't disagree with you. If someone wants something of yours bad enough, they'll get it. An alarm at this point is to scare away some punk that doesn't know what he is doing or have access to a rollback.

So for some the little red blinking light means move on and to others it's just a challenge. :D

Other than my guns and my insomnia keeping me awake at night to hear people breaking into my shit.... I would really like to wire up a set of Nathan's train horns to the relay in the alarm that sounds the stock puny horn.
If I were a theif... Train horns would scare the shit out of me!!! And absolutely wake up the neighborhood.

Do you realize how easy it is to pull out your fender liners, clip your battery cables with some bolt cutters, and then take your time? Stop playing it out like you're some superhero cowboy who cant be had by ANYONE else out there. I dont give a crap how light a sleeper you are, if a theif wants whats in your truck, hes gonna get it.

Im telling you guys, you are wasting your money. Doesnt matter how fancy or "good" your alarm is. You think all the pros dont know even the best alarms like the back of their hand???????????

My 06 had a cheap aftermarket alarm that sucked (also had a bad install job). Changed that to a Viper 5902 with remote start. Got to playing with the remote, and it would do 2 systems. Had one installed in the 04 a couple of weeks later. One remote 2 keys 2 trucks. Makes life a lot easier. Not to mention that when its 30 outside, I can start the truck from inside and walk out to the heated truck. Works with the A/C also.

I agree with Ben it's all smoke and mirrors and a waste of money except the remote start option. Alarms keep the honest away.

I do like the train horn idea as long as you have plenty of air available. That would be the best alarm going. Best would be on a delay so while he was pulling your head unit out say at about 10 seconds the air horn went off! I'm sure you could get rid of the shit smell that would be in your truck with a couple sprays of Febreze. :roflmao:

But seriously alarms are worthless. Best alarm is a kill switch and don't leave anything out in the open and have theft insurance.

or just take the whole ECM with me....

Sorry.. I don't mean to laugh.. but the visual of that made me  You must have a bigger back pocket than me? :)

Seriously though, I do agree with what you said for the most part... if they want something bad enough a "good" theif will get around an alarm. Though a good alarm *might* scare off some potential threats... but in the end, your best bet is not leaving it outside if you have a choice at all...

Ben, I agree/disagree with you. Yes, If someone wants yours stuff, they will get it. But, i do think the little "red" light and the window stickers will deter alot of the young "first timers".

Y'all are forgetting one of the best systems there are, at least while the truck is at the house anyway! Big damn dogs :D although mine are harmless, who wouldnt shit themselves when 2 130lb Great Danes came running up barking wondering what you're doing with their boys truck?! They're even mobile, anytime I take one of the dogs with me I leave the windows down, keys in and on with the radio playing. Nobody in their right mind would reach in a truck with one of those things riding shotgun
