Pardon the incredibly n00b question but, I can't seem to find a definite answer on what I thought was a simple enough thing.

On my IATs, they seem to hold about ambient when cruising but come stop/go they sky rocket. Now from what I have been reading that is a function of the crappy LLY air box design and can be solved by getting an aftermarket box or hacking the stocker.

I would really want to avoid cutting anything on the truck so looking at aftermarket setups, any ones to look out for, or suggestions on good ones?

Anything that pulls the air from down low, or if worried about water, the pass side fender.

Make sure the box is sealed, not one of those that "seals" up against the hood.

Yea, was slightly worried about water ingestion.

So as far as lowering IAT's, they work in general?

As long as the box is sealed. You may have to add some sticky foam stripping/weather stripping to the spot where it mates to the fender to make a good seal. Hot engine air is bad.

Got any pics of it when it was on your truck? It pulls air in from the fender area I am assuming?

No I don't have any pictures. The bottom of the air filter box is all open as well as the side. I'm not saying its the best to go with. It's just one of the sealed units I know of. I never watched my IAT so I can't say it made any difference.

So I guess its whether or not a down scoop is worth the additional ~$80 bucks.

You could try it and see if it helps. I know someone on dieselplace made a special piece of rubber that connected the airbox to the fender...I forget who but it was kinda pricey for a piece of rubber. You could probably make something on your own.
