Gonna adjust my valves on my new motor, but kinda puzzled on the ati damper. The oem damper has the indention mark to align with the one on the front cover, but the ati doesn't so how do u know when ur at tdc? Or will I have to pull the ati and slide the oem one back on the crank? Gonna be fun to get the ati off with the block in the truck..... Anyone have info? Thanks

Check the valve springs. Whichever crank rotation you start with, the #1 rocker bridge should be both loose OR the the #4 rocker bridge will both be loose.

ie.. meaning no compression placed on the valve springs.

I bought a cheap puller from advanced auto that works mint to get the dampner off in the truck.

On engines that I don't have to set Injector height on like a duramax. I have always just bumped the engine over with a remote starter tool or turn it over with a ratchet. Anyways whichever valve is compressed on the same cylinder the opposite valve will be on the base circle of the cam shaft, meaning it can be adjusted (intake compressed means the exhaust can be adjusted or vice versa). Mark that valve with a paint marker and move on to the next.

I would go that direction before swapping the dampner.

Well here's the deal. Got block all back in, first few starts it was fine, now I can hear a chatter out of the driver side head, so I believe I had one back off. I plan to remove driver side valve cover only, my twins are all over the pass side so it require some work to get down to the valve cover. I have a puller for the ati damper, but was trying to keep from removing it as it fits pretty snug and won't be a cake walk to remove in truck. I can go off compressed springs but I dnt feel I can get it right, always went off marks. I was planning to bring cyl 4 to tdc, set the valves I can, rotate a revolution and set the others, assuming someone knew what degree mark the ati damper equates out to.... If not I'll pull it and throw oem on just to make sure it's right. Believe problem is in cyl 8 valves only, maybe 6, but definitely backside of the head according to sound

I can check tomorrow night for you, and post a pic and a measurement of the tdc mark on my ati dampner if that would help. My motor is on the stand

If you look close at your ATI damper there is a top dead center (TDC) marking along with the degrees. I marked it with a paint paint pen to make it easier to see.

I never use the damper to set valves. If you set using the traditional method line half at one time you will have problems with correct lash if using a bigger camshaft. I always check spring compressions and set using that method. Always right the first time around.

Using stock cam, Hamilton 125lb springs etc. I'll look at my damper tonight but I didn't see a tdc mark on it I don't think? Just used stock damper before I thru the block back in.

Dont know if it would work or not but my thought is to use some kind of a base and dial indicator to find your rollover point off the pushrod side of the rocker and find tdc with that cylinder and move on to the next. just an idea but it sounds easier than pulling the balancer.

Just run down through like a race car exhaust valve half down set intake valve, intake all the way down and half up set exhaust valve on each cylinder, much easier!
