So after a while of looking, my dad has finally found a Duramax that he likes and is considering getting it this coming Thursday. It's a solid truck, really clean and well taken care of. it's the 04 LLY with the PCV reroute, EGR blocked and the Ice Pick fix. He also has an ATS Stage III with Co-Pilot, Raptor lift pump with Cat filter and DSP5 tuning from Duramaxtuner.com. It still has the factory tie-rods/idler/pitman but is stock height with slightly larger tires, so I'm not too worried there. The only concern we have is that with the engine running and the oil fill cap off, there is visible steam/smoke as well as a grinding noise. The noise can barely be heard with the cap on. The owner said this started just within the past couple months. He noticed it during an oil change, but said it happened sometime after he replaced the water pump with an ACDelco one.
Also of note, the owner said that the truck ran 13.6 on a PPE on level 9, but only a 14.2 on his race tune, which he said should be about 470+ hp. Could this all be symptoms of a cracked piston/cylinder? It's a stock turbo, so no huge boost numbers. I figured the steam was just normal and that the noise was the water pump since I read there was an issue with ACDelco pumps. Could the .6 time difference just be a combination of driver error, less aggressive tuning and enviromental changes? The runs were about a year apart. Sorry for the long winded post, just want to make sure my dad's investment is going to last him a long time like I keep telling him it will. :thumb:
