about 50k he was running it hard and the coolant line on the turbo blew so he changed it and thats when it all started and now when he runs it hard it blows water out the over flow.

Not necessarily a smell from the exhaust. The coolant rarely mixes with the oil when a head gasket blows on a Duramax. If it is a head gasket, the black stuff is soot from the combustion gasses getting into the cooling system. Typically when a head gasket goes the coolant system will be overly pressurized. After he has run the truck have him check the upper radiator hose. It should be firm, but not hard. If the gasket is blown, you usually won't be able to compress it any when you squeeze it.

turbo seal went out. i had that happen to my rig. at 100k after i got it fixed then the oil seal on the turbo started sucking oil out of the block. was going threw about 3 qt. every 1000 miles. it also could be a headgasket. tell him to check his oil in his crank case.
