What did we just watch? What got fried?

Nothing got fried. You watched a switch getting opened up. If you watch all three phases( A,B,C) where opened but the one started arcing. They were probably taking a substation out of service for repair. They are not supposed to arc like that but sometimes when the switchgear is opened it will fail to quench the arc like that. This one reason alot of power companies use oil or gas insulated switchgears so you dont have this.

Hell of a light show!

Seen that vid at safety meetings a few times. IIRC the actual sealed disconnects failed on that phase. So when they opened the disconnect, well, you see what happened.

I think the message was to anticipate equipment failure... before it happens.
