Okay I want to take my 2wd 04 chevy 2500hd 6.6 duramax and make it into a 4x4. My question is on the axle. Do axles differ from gas and diesel? Could I take a axle off a 2500 gas or do I have to stick with getting it off a diesel truck.

I've pulled a rear end from a 2001 6.0 gas an we put in a lbz which was 3.73
2500HD and 3500 with a 6.0L were 4.10 gears. 1500HD and 2500 NON HD got 3.73 gears, but were the 9.5" semi float. 2500HD with a 6.0L are 10.5, but all 3500's got the 11.5". As to the front axle, make sure it's a 9.25 as some gassers came with the lighter 8.25" axle. Pretty sure all 2500HD and up came with 9.25" axles, but make sure first. I believe the 8.1L got 3.73 or 4.10 gears.
