My 4l80e has 200,000 miles on it and i am starting to do quit of bite of heavy pulling with her. Take the dmax back and forth to the pulls and pulling the tractors from ranch to ranch. I wanna get a pulling serise tranny for this thing and a temp gauge for my tranny. I pulled my dipstick yesterday and my tranny fluid smells burnt and looks burnt but the tranny is not slipping. Can someone give me a off the wall figure on about what it would cost to get this tranny refreshed for pulling with the new converter??

Call GM. Your trans is not worth building.

my 97 6.5 plow truck has the 4l80 e and it smelled burnt for like 3-4 years; i just kept changing the fliud once a year and finally my brother (16 yr old) plows with it and breaks the reverse band in it. my trans guy said the clutches still looked new when he went through it.

probably like its not worth rebuilding a 350 for use in a pickup as a stock power motor... you can buy crate 350's with warranty for like $1300.

i'm guessing that 4l80's are the same?? cheaper to buy direct than to pay someone else to rebuild

The problem is with today technology dont they have clucths that take heat better. And u can put more clucths in a drum. Saying that a 4l80e is junk and u shouldnt rebuild them is just like saying a allison is garbage and u shouldnt rebuilt it. People only build stuff to make it better to do your everyday live style. You cacth my drift??

There is nothing wrong with the tranny now. I just wanna put better quailty parts in it for the road ahead.

No its just common sense. The truck has the original transmission in it that has 200,000 miles on it if i had 200,000 miles on me i would fill like hooking to 18,000 pounds and dragging it down the road. I would want a refresh

its not even an HD. Its a 2500 light duty (6-lug)

Wrong Ben its 8 lug with 4.10's.

And yes i haul the dmax with 1500 pounds in the bed of my truck and the weight of the trailer. Give or take a little on the 18000 pounds but not far from it. I got tool box full of tools and 2 decent size craftsmen boxes full also

well then the picture you posted a while back isnt actually your truck. The truck pic you posted was 6 lug. Or was that another fantasy thing of yours that you say you have but actually dont like the GT42?

Ive tried to take this to pms before but look at where it ended up

Like i said if i post a thread and you dont have no tech for it then dont even waste your danm time typing.

What I'm saying is; with 200K miles on the 4L80, you will need a lot of hard parts and your valve body is worn out. Every bushing and torrington bearing is suspect and should not be used over. Your trans is beyond an upgrade.
Your comparrison of the 4L80 and an Allison is way off base. An Alli can go 200K and be upgraded.
