Rebuilding a trans for a guy. A local trans shop said dacco was bought out by someone else and he has had quite a few failures from them. Is this true? He warrantied the converter with a precision converter so I'm not complaining. Just curious about the dacco thing.

Dacco was bought out by Transtar. Dacco converters were always shit. Transtar not so bad.

It's a long story but the local trans shop couldn't figure out why it wouldn't lock up. They put a dacco in and it helped a little but got worse. When I got the truck I pulled the pan and it was immaculate which is what I would expect. They just changed all the solenoids and the valve body harness with new fluids, tc, and filter. OD clutches are shot and the sprang is on its way out. After the converter gets here it should be good to go. I need to check the speed sensor/ ring in the transfer case as well.

I put a Transtar in my 99 and my LMM.. Haven't had an issue with them in either... Both single disc TC

When I get parts on the shelves for full rebuild I'll take the LMM to fire punk and turn the wick up.. Figure I got a solid 600hp worth of fuel/air on the truck..

I've run the TRANSTAR's in a few 4L60E's, and they always locked up nice and solid. I also liked the stall in them for a stock replacement. Coupled real nice once you come up on it. I know some converters don't really come in very solid.

The truck is a 1998 1 ton plow truck. The trans issue didn't affect too much when plowing. When he got up to 50-55 it would shift into OD and start slipping. He thought it was lock up messing up.

Tell him to leave it in 3rd lol. One of my 98s is a k2500 with 3.42 gears, it has been plowing the last 3 seasons with the same issue.

2 things I've learned from having quite a few gmt400 trucks

If the pcm doesn't confirm lock up after a few minutes in OD at operating temp it will default to 3rd.
If the OD pack is fried it will slip like neutral in OD

I had a 170,000mi 4l80 lose OD from a piece of casting flash that somehow finally cut the o-ring on the accumulator piston.

It's a little too late for that one. It's almost ready to go back in. The guy has plowed with it like this for two years now.

It will never couple. It will just come out of the hole better and fall off.

It always coupled great for me even with 4500 pounds of salt in the bed. Its not anything like the 4l60 version from an s-10 in a truck or camaro. I drove the truck for years like that. It really sucked when i broke the rear band just before a storm and had to stick a stock spare with stock converter in it.
