I've searched here and elsewhere and can't seem to find a definite answer. I'm looking at buying a 99 sierra 1500 for a beater, however it has no reverse or overdrive. The guy says that it is a common problem with these transmissions and he wants to sell it as is. It has around 175k on it. Any ideas what it could be, or if it really is even a common problem with them? Worse case is it would need a full rebuild I'm assuming, how does rebuilding one of these compare to an allison? What parts would you recommend I go with? Thanks for the help;)

You may get lucky, but it definately sounds like a broken sun shell. I did one a few years back with 221K on it and was expecting it to need a full rebuild since it had a broken sunshell. Got it open and every clutch in it looked new except for 1 3-4 clutch. I still replaced em all while I was in there, put a beast sun sheell in it, TRANSTAR converter, and a TRANSGO HD-2 shift kit. All in all the parts were well under $1K, the tricky part is if you are able to rebuild it yourself or not. I know most shoips charge an arm and a leg to build em anymore as everybody wants a long warranty and that costs money.

My only request is that you put a drain plug in the pan while it's tore apart  . I don't know if it's laid out like the newer ones, I changed fluid on my GF's 1/2 ton 05 suburban.... pulling the pan is a huge PITA compared to how it *should* be... so I welded in a plug while I had it off...really though, IMO there is no excuse for it not coming with a drain

Sorry to get of course there and rant....
