Took this apart for a family friend. It looked to me like there were pieces of a thrust bearing in the pan. Unfortunately I was right. These are just the worst parts, but pretty much every splined part has been ruined.

Ouch. Not so much fun. At this point would it not be cheaper to find a used one and just do a overhaul on it?

They're gonna go with a used unit. The pump and converter are trashed too. No labor to pay for a rebuild either

I scored a 4l80 from a buddy while back. The 4l60 is going out on my 99 and soon as I can, will be switching them out. From reading, I couldn't afford to try and keep the 60 going for my plans...
