Mike

Kurt has told me to contact you about my transmission. I have a 47re that is old and retiring on me when it aint suppose to. It does not wanna shift into gears. It use to not go into reverse or forward Kurt and i tighten the bands in the tranny up and finally go it to go in forward and reverse. Now when u drive down the road it will not go into second or any other gear. It used to go into second if u just put it into netural and put it right back down in drive it would shift. Now nothing. Kurt has said it has something to do with the shift solinoids or something to that affect. Any info will be appercaited.

Thanks Adrian.

Who built it, what's in it, what are you wanting it to do? Mike or I could probably help you out.

Brayden

The transmission in his truck is just an old run down stocker. His dads has pulled some very heavy loads with the truck im surprise the transmission is the only problem with it. His dad was looking at a couple of autozone trannys and i didnt think he would benefit much from that route. He wants a reliable tranny he can depend on to pull loads and add a little bite of extra hp but he dont want the 3500 dollar bill to follow it.

Get a good converter (SC), an extreme duty rebuild kit from Suncoast, a valve body from them (or Mike) and you should be good to go. Sounds like you don't need all the billet stuff. Less than 2000.00 out the door in parts.

I am sure with this purchase he may need to go and get some alto clucths. We have not tore the tranny completey down yet but when we took the pan off to change the fluid it had some black fluid in it and smelled burnt. There was alot of metal from the torque converter all over the magnet and all through out the tranny pan.

People that tighten bands down when experiencing a slip need to stop and think. This is not a brake drum with brake shoes that need adjusting. The lining on the bands is not much thicker than the paper you write on. So, if bands are loose; guess what? When you tighten the bands down in a situation like this, you force the band to go metal to metal with the drum and then you need hard parts that you never would have needed had you not done this shit. Bands should be preset once upon rebuild and only checked after that to make shure the nut didn't back off. No adjusting is ever needed after that.

You did not piss in my cheerios at all. I am trying to educate you.

Ok thanks mike. I guess i just read that from a non educated point of view. I must admit i know the bands are paper think. But i figured that if i tighten them maybe that would solve all the problem. I am no expert with any transmission thats why we realy on you for that.

Thanks for the info can u get me a priceing on what u think it will take to fix it. Including the shift senoris im sure it will need just alto clucths converter and vb along with the soilnoids.

Is it actually an RE, or an RH? If an re, it could be a governor pressure sensor. Little brass sensor in the vb. They are known to take a dump and cauise tons of issues.

Is the truck 2 or 4 wd? If 2, I may be able to help you out with a complete trans.

The truck is 4wd but what do u have tranny wise. He needs to get it back on the road as soon as possible. So im sure he will possibly settle for a 2wd tranny. I will contact him tommorw and talk to him.

You guys need to sit down and figure out a budget you can work with. Then you need to realize that if the budget doesn't allow you to build a fairly strong transmission that you should not be throwing more power at it. These Dodge transmissions are not cheap to play with especially if you did hard part damage by over tightening the bands(like Mike already stated).
Figure out you budget and then get on the phone with someone that knows what they are doing and go from there.

My budget for this tranny is 2,000 dollars. I need it to tow more then anything. I hall anywhere from 25 - 30k pounds. Yes I know the truck is not cut out for that kinda weight axle wise. Kurt will be doing the install and everything eles on it he seems like he has a little bite of knowledge working on these diesel. He did tell me this will only be the 3rd tranny he has done. I talked to a couple others thats had work done by him and they all seem to be satisfyed about it all. So what can i get with a 2,000 dollar budget??

If you damaged the drums from screwing with the bands I don't think you will do it for that price. Not with a good converter at least. I'm talking just parts too, not labor.

Not to get off of these guys' subject, but I have a 47RH in my truck, and I have not messed with the bands at all. Are you guys thinking/saying with their budget ([~$2000] likely my same budget in the future) I should be able to get a new TC, and heavy/extreme duty rebuild kit, and valve body; and then be good to go with the power I am putting down and possibly a little more yet?:confused:

Plus labor.
