I have heard a couple different answers, and I know alot of you guys have run the GT4094R, so I would like to ask: is some shaft play normal with a BB turbo? I have one sitting infront of me, and there is definitely some movement in the shaft.

When the gt4094 has no oil in it the shaft will move up and down some, add some oil into the top and spin the wheel as you do then try moving it.

I just got done measuring the play as best I could. I have approx. 0.09-0.1mm (.0035-0.004in.) up and down. The radial play is what concerns me- it was hard to measure, but I have what appears to be a little over 1 mm (0.40-0.50in.) side to side. I know that it has been sitting, so there is no oil to speak of in the bearings at this point. Do these numbers sound right, or did I get the "shaft"? hahaha I'll throw some oil in it and re-check, but I'm having a heart attack over here.

once I added oil my shaft play felt the same as when it was dry. I didn't measure the play but it is a decent amount

Well, I'm starting to feel a little more at ease, but I would love to hear some more opinions before I start bolting this thing on. Thanks for all the input, guys.

I would preoil the turbo spin that wheel around a few times and install that thing. You are fine.

See mine once I added oil it took almost all of it away.I even told KevinL that he would feel the shaft move just add oil and then turn it over and add more it would get tighter.

Unless you see contact on the compressor housing, you are OK.

All turbos have "floating bearings" or they would not last long.

I will say that it is VERY close to making contact at the inlet side. If I push the shaft hard, I can make the top edge blades slightly touch on one spot of the inlet, but I get no contact no matter what on the back side of the compressor housing (where the wheel is cut to clear the housing inlet).

Is this a new turbo?

If its used I think I know where it came from. You could have a local shop check it out if you are really worried.

It is used, supposedly very little. Bought it from a very nice guy, and I'm not doubting his credibility at all, I'm just completely new to all of this. I'm just trying to make sure I don't make a big and costly mistake. I feel like a clown for having to bother you guys with all of these questions, but I know I'll get the correct answers if I ask around here. Thanks to all of you for the input thus far.

To update, I squirted some oil into the cartridge, and it made things a little tighter. I think I'm gonna follow Paint's advice and bolt that bad boy on as soon as I round up the rest of the installation parts.as of now, I need to come up with a pedestal, studs, and the gaskets. Anyone have any good sources?

PPE sells kits, bullseye makes a very inexpensive unit and RDL makes them too

If it were me I'd send it out, if it hits now no telling what it will do. It's way cheaper now then if it comes apart while wide open. A turbo can be ruined very quicky. I happen to have an A5K center in my shop that needs to be rebuilt after 1 hook

Oh, you can count on that....as long as I don't botch the install. Building my transmission was easy, so I hope this little project goes just as well. haha

Use PB Blaster on the up pipe bolts now right now LOL
