My wife has a 2002 explorer (150K) with a automatic and I want to check the fluid in the trans. has anyone done this? according to the manual (the way i reed it) it sounds like the trans May have a excess amount to fluid in it from the factory?

how do you all reed it? http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl066i.htm

I ran the engine and pulled the little plug and it started pouring out. if it was at the proper level it should not come out right.

Thanks for looking.

Is this the one without a dipstick? If so its a total pain. The way we were told is this: Drain and replace filter. Remove the plug at rear, add 3 quarts. Start and make 1 run thru all gears just idling. Then, while engine is still running in park, loosen drain and start adding fluid till it runs out in a steady stream and tighten drain and your done. For all the work it took for them to figure this out they could have made an f'ing dipstick!

Yep no dipstick. when you add fluid are you adding fluid through the bolt on the side or can i pump it in to the bottom drain bolt? I took the little Allan bolt out of the bottom of the pan and fluid came pouring out, dose this mean it had too much fluid in it?

If it's at the proper level it will still be coming out in a small stream or fast drip. They are a huge PITA.

It was not that bad. I pulled the pan changed the filter than put a little shy of 4qt's in the pan and bolted it up being careful not to spill it, took it around the block a few times and checked it and it was good to go. it is stupid there is no dipstick.

When I worked at the ford dealer, some guys would take out the speed sensor and fill it through that hole. I never tried it but they seemed to like it.
