I have on 06 Allison that the internal filter fell off and caused it to smoke the torque converter. Just got done rebuilding it with a stage 3 suncoast kit and torque converter. Took it for a test drive and everything seems to be shifting just fine and running fine. But the temp kept slowly climbing and climbing until about a hour after having it out of the shop driving it, it reached 250 degrees. What could be causing the heat problem. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

First of all:
I have seen a bunch of filters fall off and none of them ever hurt the Alli. Granted the people never pushed it into oblivion when the heat and slipping started.
If you fried your Alli because of a filter falling off; you pushed it past the limit. Why?
Now; you may have clutch material stuck in the heat exchanger in the radiator blocking cooler flow. Just a guess.

Fluid level is good. As far as the when the filter fell off I was having over heating problems that when I dropped the pan and saw the filter was off and saw the metal flakes and figured out the torque converter was toast. The alli ran fine and shifted fine all the while no codes, noticible slips or anything it was just over heating and seeing the metal flakes that after seeing some posts on here that I thought to pull and check the torque converter. The alli was fine other than all the metal flakes in it so that's why it got rebuilt while it was out. Clutches were all good none of them came apart or anything all debri was tc metal but I needed it stronger so I can go for more tune in the future. So like I say I just assumed things over heated and went out because the filter fell out because I didn't find any other problems when I tore it down....anyway back to the current problem. Mike L I was just thinking tonight that maybe I could have a blockage or partial blockage as you said in the radiator or the cooler since it did take some time for it to get hot. I had a lot of metal flake (some pretty large) that I cleaned out of the Alli when I had it out. I was already thinking of taking the cooler out and trying to flush it out and clean it out. What would you recommend for the best way to clean the heat exchanger in the radiator. I was gonna take the cooler out of the truck and wash it with solvent and air. Is there also a possibility of a collapsed hose. If so is there any way to check for that?

I washed backward through my cooler and heat exchange this morning and got a lot of metal flake back out of it. Drive around for an hour or more so far and temp is staying right at 160. Will let you guys know if it does heat back up. Thanks for the help.

You could use a thermo heat gun to check the temperature at different places on the cooler and lines.

I have played around with that and it gave me no solid info because you are reading heat sink and actual fluid temps. The gun lead me on a lot of wild goose chases. It has been sitting in my tool box unused for 5 years now.

I played around with that yesterday while I was trying the truck out. When the tranny temp guage said 160. The pan was 131, bell housing 165, cooler 152. I tried it because I had a guy tell me maybe my problem was just my gauge was bad after having gotten the tranny hot.

But I drove the truck around yesterday and the hottest it got to I think was 200. So im pretty sure judging by all the crap I got out of the heat exchange that it was blocking most my flow. Thanks Again guys for the help.
