i got this truck in April. the batteries were purchased Feb. '08. last night, the truck wouldn't start all of the sudden. took the ground off on the primary (had corrosion) and cleaned it, then it started. went to the parts store and tested it. it initally tested good, but was at 86%. tried charging it and it wouldn't charge, then tested bad (Napa gold). took the second battery off and it tested and charged fine.
anyway, the bad battery looks like it was leaking at some point. the trays under both batteries are almost non-existant due to corrosion. i asked the previous owner about the old batteries (good friend anyway) and he said the secondary exploded, thats when he changed both of them.
my truck's volt meter in the dash always reads about 3 tick marks past 14v.
example: 14 . . x l . . . 19
is this normal, or is this too high? someone mentioned to me that the alternator might be overcharging, causing the battery leaks and pre-mature failure. does that sound right? i havent tested the alternator yet, just curious if everyone elses volts read that high in the dash.
